Verbatim external hard drive fail?

My external keeps automatically ejecting and clicking. Basically its toast. I'm wondering if there is ANY way (preferably inexpensive) to get all must stuff off of it. Like an idiot I didn't back up the external. My macbook recently failed and I didn't get to put my files back on it before the external decided to fail as well.
