How does one identify the manufacturer of an obscure shotgun that does not display a brand name?

a lot of older firearms do not have a model name or number, such as my Voere .22lr rifle, all there is is the manufacturer- Voere, and the serial number. some of the older guns, especially foreign ones, lack a model name/number. I'd take it to a gun smith or a gun store and see what they say.
